Sorry for the Mitt Romney photo.  I had some comments on an opinion piece he wrote.  So I figured If I had Obama up front then why not Mitt.  So onto my news and thoughts…

Florida appeals gay marriage ban…

This appears to be a correct ruling.  According to the 14th Amendment, states can not make laws which limits a citizens rights or liberties.  As such the Florida law would be in contradiction to this.  They can either allow marriage to everyone or make it illegal for everyone but not illegal to some people.  Here is section 1 of the 14th Amendment:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

To say I am not a big Romney supporter would be mild but this article does raise some valid concerns and points.  Still he is correct, the world is not a safer place these days.  We need a strong defense which is one of our governments biggest constitutional responsibilities.  But do we need to be the world police with over 1,000 bases scattered around the world?  These days our reach is global no matter where we are at so having all these bases seems like very excessive overkill.  And so what if Russia has more nuclear weapons.  After a certain point it really become irrelevant since the planet would be a cinder before you can use them all.  We have over 7,700 ourselves, way more than enough to obliterate the planet several times over.  He also comment on China having a bigger Navy in a few years.  While the Navy is important for presence and support, the biggest navy usually doesn’t win wars these days.  The military is a big bucket of waste that needs “Reformed”.  There needs to be more efficiency and focus on technology rather than just who has the most planes, boats, and troops.  By removing most of our foreign bases and focusing primarily on our real national defense, we can reduce spending dramatically while strengthening our security.  We also need to restore our space programs which would be a better and more efficient way of extending our global reach.  Am I sounding like Newt Gingrich now?  On a side note, please DO NOT run again Mitt.
